There are numerous fly fishing opportunities within 30 minutes of the ranch, but Alberta's most prolific brown trout stream, Stauffer Creek (aka North Raven River), is only 20 yards from the lodge. Stauffer is a premier spring creek fishery with nearly a thousand trout per mile in a stream averaging less than eight yards wide!
We're located only a few miles from the major spring source of this fine trout stream. Therefore, the water rarely gets high or muddy and is very reliable. In fact, there are numerous spring sources throughout the valley which means the Stauffer rarely freezes in the winter. If it does, it freezes for only a few short weeks if we get severe winter cold.
And if you are in the area, don't be shy about taking in the province's best cutthroat trout waters in the Ram River system. Both the North Ram River & South Ram River are catch and release trout streams that offer solid trout fly fishing in strikingly different scenery.
All these waters are open to the public and may be fished with or without a guide. If you have not been to the area previously, we recommend a guide for at least a day to familiarize yourself with the water, trout, and tactics to catch them.
However, anglers beware, as Stauffer Creek is referred to as Alberta's most finicky trout stream as well. The crystal clear waters and heavy hatches of mayflies, caddisflies, midges, and terrestrials make Stauffer a challenging little stream. Local guides are available to help you get more familiar with the stream if you desire to challenge your skills against these wily trout.
Stauffer Creek isn't the only water nearby. The Red Deer River is now producing many fine brown trout as well. Also, central Alberta streams such as Prairie Creek, the Raven River, and the Clearwater River all are nearby and offer timely fly fishing for good browns. Beaver Lake is now a local water source designated by our Fish & Wildlife Department as a trophy trout area. After two years it is now producing 24+" rainbow trout.
